2007 REGION 3 at Union NJ (reprinted from the Star Ledger)
Champions again: Delbarton senior Frank Perrelli, the state champion at 112 pounds last winter, won for the third straight year. He captured the 119-pound title after winning at 112 last season and 103 as a sophomore. S Plainfield's Patrick Hunter, third in the state at 103 pounds last winter, bumped up to win the region title at 112. Perrelli's junior teammate, Trevor Melde, won at 135 after winning at 130 a year ago. Brearley junior Jesse Boyden, sixth in the state at 215 last season, was a repeat champion at 215 pounds.
Outstanding wrestler: Delbarton's Trevor Melde, second in the state at 130 as a sophomore last season, registered three pins on his way to the 135-pound title. Melde pinned Andrew Burke of Irvington in 1:50 in the quarterfinal round, Joe Mraz of Brearley in 3:49 in the semifinals and Billy Ashnault of S Plainfield in 4:37 in the final to raise his season log to 38-0.
Surprise: Parsippany sophomore Nick Bach was seeded sixth in the 140-pound bracket, but decisioned third-seeded Dan Coppola of Seton Hall Prep, second-seeded Mike Montgomery of Roselle Park and top-seeded Nick Dorey of S Plainfield in succession to win his first region title. Bach wrestled for Kittatinny last winter and took fourth at District 4.
Back points: Five wrestlers who finished second last winter rebounded to take gold. Brearley's Kenny Knapp, second at 103 as a freshman, won at that weight this year. Anthony Priore of Johnson, second at 119 last season, took the 130-pound title. Pat Mineo of Scotch Plains, second at 140, won the 145-pound crown. Kyle Kaufman of Madison took first at 171 pounds after placing second last season. Bradley McLaren of Columbia, second at heavyweight last winter, won at that weight this season. Also, Scotch Plains' Sal Gano (38-0), third at 119 last winter, took home the 125-pound title. S Plainfield, the state Group 3 champion, had nine wrestlers advance to the state tournament, including seven finalists. Patrick Hunter (112) was the school's lone champion. Watchung Hills' sophomore Brendan Ard, the son of former Giants player Billy Ard, won at 160 pounds after placing fourth at 171 last year.

2006 REGION 3 (reprinted from the Star Ledger)
Champions again: Three-time state champion Mike Grey of Delbarton of Morris Township and two-time state champion Darrion Caldwell of Rahway head a list of six returning champions. Grey won his fourth region title with a 14-7 victory over South Plainfield's Jimmy Conroy at 125 while Caldwell won his third by defeating Millburn's Seth Podhoretz, 9-2, at 152. Watchung Hills' Alex Caruso, the state runner-up at 152 last year, and Cranford's Pat Hogan also won their third region titles. Caruso, the state's top-ranked 160-pounder by The Star-Ledger, won at 145 and 152 the last two years. The 171-pound Hogan won at 152 and 160 the previous two years. Delbarton's Frank Perelli captured the 112-pound title after winning at 103 last year and Rahway's Andre Neblett won his second straight heavyweight title.
Outstanding wrestler: Grey, who became the state's all-time winningest wrestler at District 9 last week and is bidding to become New Jersey's first four-time state champion, beat South Plainfield's Jimmy Conroy in the region final for the second straight year. Grey (154- for his career) won a 14-7 decision over Conroy in the 125-pound final after beating him, 10-4, in the 119-pound region final to earn OW honors and 9-4 in the state final last year.
Surprise: South Plainfield's Bryan Hunt, the eighth seed at 130, upset 2005 112-pound state champion Ryan Wilson of Rahway, 3-2, in the quarterfinals. Wilson, who was forced out the tournament due to a wrist injury that ends his season, hadn't lost a match all season while Hunt entered the tournament with 13 losses. Hunt then recorded a reversal at the buzzer in quadruple overtime to defeat New Providence's Michael Boccellari, 2-0, in the semifinals before falling in the final to Delbarton's Trevor Melde by a technical fall.
Back points: Group 3 state champion South Plainfield was 11-0 in the quarterfinals and sent nine to the state tournament, although it did suffer a disappointment when Ed McCray was upset by Watchung Hills' Shane Riccio, 4-2, in the 145-pound final. McCray (33-1) defeated Riccio, 13-1, in the District 12 final last week.

Champions Again: Senior Jesse Boyden of Brearley won for the third time at 215 pounds while teammate Kenny Knapp, a junior, won at 119 after winning last year at 103. Knapp placed third in the state at 103 last March. Junior Nick Bach of Parsippany repeated at 140 pounds. Watchung Hills junior Brendan Ard won at 171 pounds after winning at 160 last winter. Ard, who finished third in the state at 160 last year, won by decision over Kyle Kaufmann of Madison, 6-3, in the region final to deny Kaufmann a repeat title at 171.
Outstanding Wrestler: Umar Taramov of Brearley won the 160-pound crown. Taramov, a junior who moved to the U.S. from Russia two years ago, was seeded fourth in his weight class and promptly beat top-seeded Dustin Brooks of Boonton, 12-1, in the semifinals and third-seeded Mark Wagner of South Plainfield, 11-4, in the final.
Surprises: South Plainfield's lone champion came from an unlikey wrestler as Nick Vallone, the sixth seed, cut a swath through the 145-pound bracket. First Vallone avenged two defeats this season to third-seeded Matt Ellery of Middlesex when he won by fall in 5:35 in the quarterfinals. Vallone then pinned second-seeded Dan Coppola of Seton Hall Prep in 1:38 in the semifinals and followed with an 11-1 major decision over fourth-seeded Rob Hernandez of Whippany Park in the final.
While he didn't win a title, John Barnes of Westfield definitely let the 2,000 in attendance at Union know that he has an exciting future. Barnes, a junior and the fifth seed at 125, pinned fourth-seeded Chris Puorro of Seton Hall Prep in 5:33 in the quarterfinals and top-seeded Anthony Marino of Parsippany in 4:46 in the semifinals before bowing to third-seeded Craig Montgomery of Roselle Park, 4-3, in the final.
Back Points: Joe Lospinoso (135 pounds) and Hany Elshiekh (189) joined teammates Kenny Knapp (119), Umar Taramov (160) and Jesse Boyden (215) in winning titles for Brearley, the Group 2 state runner-up this winter. Joining Nick Bach (140) from Parsippany as a titlist was Kyle Hussey, who claimed the 130-pound crown. Peter Terrezza (30-0) of New Providence was one of two undefeated wrestlers to emerge from Region 3 as he earned his first title with an 11-0 victory over Delbarton's Jeff Canfora at 112. Madison junior Mike Hall, who rejoined the team in mid-February after rehabilitating an ACL injury, ran his record to 14-0 with a 3-2 decision over Fabrice Emogene of Columbia in the heavyweight final. Seton Hall Prep freshman Lou Mascola (35-2) tied the school record for victories in a season when he pinned Vinny Zaccardi of Middlesex in the 103-pound final in 5:06. Jack Decker won 35 matches in 2004 for Seton Hall.
