     2008 District 9  by THE STAR-LEDGER
        Saturday February 23, 2008, 10:09 PM

Champions again: Madison's Kyle Kaufmann won his third title at 171; heavyweight champion Mike Hall won after winning 215 a year ago; Parsippany teammates Kyle Hussey (130) and Nick Bach (140) won back-to-back titles; Dustin Brooks of Boonton defended at 160.

Outstanding Wrestler: Freshman Eric Fajardo of Boonton, the third seed, pinned second-seeded Jeff Canfora of Delbarton in the semifinals. He then pinned top-seeded Dave Standridge of Parsippany, last year’s 103-pound champion and this year’s Morris County champion, in 2:23 of the 112-pound final.

Surprise: Fajardo, who has practiced judo since the age of four, relied on moves he learned in the sport to upset two higher seeds and win the title at 112.

Back points: Told that he wouldn’t recover from a football-related knee injuryin time to wrestle motivated Madison’s Mike Hall, who returned to the mat on Feb. 11. The fourth-seeded Hall won the heavyweight title.

Dustin Brooks defended his title at 160 and became Boonton’s career leader in victories with 114. Whippany Park’s Steve Godine won the title at 103 after placing second last year. Senior Jordan Toma of Hanover Park, who missed the last two District 9 tournaments with injuries, won at 119 for his first title. Anthony Mariano of Parsippany avenged a regular-season loss to Ben McNeil when he defeated the Parsippany Hills senior, 5-4, for the 125-pound crown. McNeil finished second last year at 119 and was the champion at 119 in 2005.

Morristown sophomore Aaron Velasquez rebounded from a third-place finish at 135 last year to win the title at 135.Rob Hernandez of Whippany Park, a second-place finisher at 145 last year, took the weight class this year. Another second-place finisher last year, Morristown's Casey Flynn got the job done when he beat top-seeded Bob Grogan of Parsippany in the 215 final.
